Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

8/17/15

Visited Mt Rushmore (no incidences requiring park ranger intervention) and the Crazy Horse Memorial today. Attempted to go to Jewel Cave National Monument, but their tours were sold out; maybe tomorrow. Drove through Custer State Park and saw some cool rock formations - no bison/buffalo, though. Ended the day with a trip to Firehouse Wine Cellars and Brewing Co.

Took a trip to WY to check out Devils Tower (aka Bear Lodge). They've got a nice "trail" (it's actually a paved path) that goes around the tower (1.3 mi). During the drive back, drove through Sundance, WY and Deadwood, SD. While in Deadwood, I did a tasting at Belle Joli Winery Tasting Room. Made my way back to Rapid City for dinner at Independent Ale House.

There are a couple of different theories...

8/19/15

Decided to go through Custer State Park again while heading to Cheyenne. When I went through the other day, I didn't get to see any bison, so I thought I'd give it another shot. There were a lot of them when I drove along Wildlife Loop. They were crossing/blocking the road and it kind of reminded me of being back home. We had beef and dairy cattle who liked to get out and cause a ruckus. People were getting out of their cars and walking up to them to take pictures. I mean, they're probably used to it, but they're still unpredictable large animals. They got really close to the cars - really, I have a smudge mark on my car from them...and no, I didn't hit any. This day provided much more wildlife than my last drive through the park - bison, mule deer, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope. Drove through Wind Cave National Park, too, but didn't actually go in to the caves on this trip. Went by some historical sites that most people my age remember from the Oregon Trail game - Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock - before heading on to Cheyenne.

Tatanka!

So they were pretty close...

And they just kept coming

Yeah, that close
But what if they approach me?

8/20/15

Started with brunch at R&B Breakfast Club - they have quite the love for Elvis. Headed to the Cowgirls of the West Museum. Turns out Wyoming was pretty progressive:

  • 12% of their homesteaders were single women who owned and controlled their land
  • women were given the right to vote and hold office in Dec 1869
  • first woman to be appointed as justice - Esther Hobart Morris was appointed on Feb 17th, 1870 as Justice of the Peace
  • first woman elected as a state representative - Mary Bellamy in 1910
  • first woman elected to Congress - Jeannette Rankin in 1916 to the House
  • first woman elected as governor - Nellie Tayloe Ross in 1924
Checked out some of the big boots they have painted around town before heading to Fort Collins. Visited a couple of breweries that I hadn't been to before and one winery - Horse & Dragon Brewing Co, Blue Skies Winery, and Equinox Brewing. Headed to Denver to have dinner with a friend before going to Monument where I'll stay with some other friends for a bit.

rodeo cowgirls - yup, they got paid to do the same stunts the cowboys did, but, of course (unfortunately), they were paid less...

**I've been using Airbnb some during this trip to find places to stay along the way. If you haven't tried it, check it out for your next trip (even internationally). Usually cheaper than a hotel...and if you have some extra space, rent it out and make some money! (https://www.airbnb.com/)**
