Further On Up The Road

Leg 1 of the trip from 6/30-7/28.
3,092 miles via car, ~133 via boat, 0.62 via aerial tram

7/29-30/15

Hung around Cincinnati with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. Visited the pool at Coney Island and tested out the waterproofness of my camera...it still works! Spent a lot of time chasing around a 13-month old...

7/31/15

Hung around Cincinnati some more before heading out in the evening to Indianapolis.

8/1/15

Ate breakfast at a diner by the speedway before embarking on some wine and beer tasting in Indianapolis. A guy at the diner said people in Indiana refer to Indianapolis as "the eyesore of Indiana."
  • Easley Winery - didn't realize they do a tour of their facility as part of their tasting. Good tour. They're in an old ice cream factory. Wines were good, too; most of them were sweet wines.
  • Sun King Brewing Company - I didn't actually care for their beer, but to each their own.
  • Indiana City Brewing Co. - their wheat was good. Like most craft brewers seem to be doing, they had a lot of hoppy beers - i.e. they had a lot of IPAs which my palate doesn't like.
Also visited former president Benjamin Harrison's home in between wine and beer tasting. There was a group of older guys that had gone to college together (at DePauw I think they said) also on the tour...they were an interesting group...I think the volunteer giving the tour was a little overwhelmed by them. They reminded me of hanging out with my family with their random history tidbits and sometimes inappropriate comments...Before leaving Indianapolis, I also visited the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Big monument in the middle of the city with an observation "deck" at the top. It was pretty hot at the top and in the stairwell. Headed to Wyoming, MI (outside of Grand Rapids) for the night.

Unique gift from a TX rancher to B. Harrison - a chair made from cattle horns and bobcat fur
A cane given as a gift to commemorate 100 years of presidents...unfortunately some of the presidents' names were misspelled...

**I've been using Airbnb some during this trip to find places to stay along the way. If you haven't tried it, check it out for your next trip (even internationally). Usually cheaper than a hotel...(https://www.airbnb.com/)**
